UK: Covid self-isolation period reduced from 10 to 7 days – Times of India

LONDON: The self-isolation period for people who have tested positive for COVID-19 in England will be reduced from 10 days to seven for those who have had two negative lateral flows on day six and the seventh since the start of their quarantine. test (LFT) results. Britain’s Health Secretary Sajid Javid announced this on Wednesday.
Javid said that the change has been made in consultation with UK Health Protection Agency (UKHSA) and aims to reduce disruption to frontline services and other businesses. Under the previous rules, people had to self-isolate for a full 10 days if they tested positive for the coronavirus.
“We want to minimize the disruption to people’s daily lives due to the pandemic, so today we will reduce the self-isolation period from 10 days to seven days for those who take lateral flow on the sixth day and the seventh day. And the result is that both those tests are negative,” he said.
“This decision has been informed by the advice of our physicians at UKHSA, who have looked at it very carefully and are very comfortable with the protection provided by this change – so that people can leave isolation after seven days as long as they have Have taken these two lateral flow tests and the results are negative – the protection it provides is similar to 10 days of isolation without testing,” he said.
“Of course, anyone who sets out after the seventh day under this new process should remain vigilant, but we are also very clear that the best way to protect ourselves, our loved ones and our community is to ensure that If you eligible again,” he said.
The change follows warnings that the National Health Service (NHS), social care and other frontline services are seeing severe shortages amid the ongoing surge of the Omron variant – which has affected the UK’s COVID-19 pandemic in recent days. Took daily infections above 90,000.
The self-isolation period was reduced from 14 days to 10 in December 2020 as the alpha version spread rapidly in parts of the UK. Recently, this year the mandatory isolation for vaccinated close contacts of a positive COVID-19 case during the delta wave was removed and has now been replaced with daily LFT.
Much of the United Kingdom follows similar quarantine and social distancing rules, with varying degrees of intensity of the lockdown.
Downing Street released a video of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday confirming that no further lockdown restrictions would be imposed across England before Christmas over the weekend. However, he insisted that the Omicron data had been carefully monitored and that the government may have to impose tighter restrictions after Christmas next week.
“What I can say tonight is that naturally we can’t rule out any further measures after Christmas, and we’re going to be keeping a constant eye on the data – whatever we do to protect public health.” Will do, we will,” he said.
Meanwhile, the UK recorded another 90,629 new COVID cases on Tuesday, down slightly from the previous day’s 91,743. Many experts believe that the peak of the Omicron version in the UK may hit this week and expect the transition to start soon.
