UK journalist loses 20 years of memories after being infected with virus

For many people, getting a cold is usually about a runny nose, sore throat, or congestion. But for one woman in the United Kingdom, it lost 20 years of memories. However, he later learned that it was not just a cold, but encephalitis, a fatal inflammation of the brain. According to a report in The Sun, 43-year-old Claire Muffett-Rees, who worked as a journalist, contracted a cold from her son Max on Father’s Day last year. After going to bed early, Claire was found unconscious the next morning after which her husband Scott took her to the hospital.

Reportedly, Claire was put on a ventilator after suffering a seizure, but when her condition worsened, she was taken to another hospital. After some tests later, the neurologist informs him that Claire’s brain was swollen due to encephalitis. Doctors said that her condition was probably caused by a virus that she had contracted.

Although Claire was taken off the life support system after spending 16 nights, trouble began when she failed to remember the events of the past 20 years. She claimed that she asked her husband about their cats that had been put to sleep years ago. Reportedly, Claire doesn’t remember giving birth to their kids and even their birthdays, or the holidays they spent together. He didn’t even remember his wedding day.

Notably, Claire didn’t even remember that the world had been hit by a pandemic and was shocked to learn of some dark events like the 9/11 attacks and the 7/7 bombings.

Describing Claire’s condition, the neurologist claimed that memory loss is a common side effect of encephalitis. He further added that there is no guarantee that Claire will ever be able to regain lost memories. However, after spending five weeks in the hospital, Claire is finally discharged and can be reunited with her children. Claire later shared that sometimes a photo would prompt a flashback but she still struggled to remember things. With grim prospects to regain her memories, Claire said she looks forward to “making many happy new ones.”
