UK PM race: Rishi Sunak wins over voters in TV debate – Times of India

London: Former Chancellor Rishi Sunki Conservative Party members confidently won over an audience in a face-to-face televised debate with rival Foreign Secretary Lizzo truss In the leadership contest to elect a new Tory Party leader and British Prime Minister.
10 on “Sky News” brought the finalists face-to-face with Conservative members who are entitled to vote in the election but are mostly undecided on their choice. He was also asked why so many senior Tory ministers and figures were backing Liz Truss.
“At every stage of the parliamentary process, I had the widest and greatest support,” Sunak said.
“We’re all a team, we’re all a family, we’re gonna come together after this and we’re going to take it [Opposition Labour Leader] Keir starrer and win the next election, because that’s the real prize. Many people sitting around the cabinet table also support me. I’ve become really really humble,” he said.
The former finance minister stuck to his central issue and focused his message on the need to check rising inflation before cutting taxes.
“But it all starts with not making the situation worse. Because if we ignite the flames of this inflationary spiral, we all, you all, are going to end up with higher mortgage rates, savings and pensions. Gone, and suffering for millions,” he said.
It came just hours after the Bank of England warned of an imminent recession in the form of raising interest rates. Truss insisted the downturn was “not inevitable” and promised a “bold” action compared to his opponent’s caution.
Sunak, however, dismissed the allegations that it is the tax burden that is causing the recession, saying: “This is absolutely wrong. The reason for the recession is inflation.”
Both candidates received heavy grilling over their various policy issues, including Brexit, immigration and support for the state-funded National Health Service (NHS). In a separate set of face-to-face grillings during the 90-minute event, Sunak was questioned about his personal wealth and asked about his expensive suit and shoes.
“I think the British people judge people by their character and their actions, not by their bank account,” he said with thunderous applause.
A member of the audience also asked if he believed he “knived out Boris”. [Johnson] for your interest”.
Sunak said of his former boss, “I worked with the Prime Minister for a few years and he deserves a lot of credit for the work he did at that time.”
