UK unveils new medal to commemorate Queen’s platinum jubilee in 2022 – Times of India

LONDON: The UK government on Saturday unveiled the design of a new medal to be awarded to the country’s frontline workers to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee. Queen Elizabeth IInext year’s rule.

The medal will be awarded to the person George and Victoria Cross Bravery Medal recipients and serving members of the Armed Forces and Emergency Services, among others, and will serve as a “symbol of the nation’s thanks to those who serve the public”, Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) said.
The history of awarding medals to mark Royal Jubilee dates back to Victorian times, when the first medals were awarded to mark the 50th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s reign.
The DCMS said plans are also being developed to mark the contribution of key workers, including National Health Service (NHS) staff, in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and will announce further plans.
It was previously announced that 2022 would mark a year of celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a four-day official holiday weekend from June 2–5, which included Trooping the Colour, the lighting of the beacons, a service of thanksgiving. Concerts, platinum pageants and nationwide street parties.
Next year, the UK is also set to host the Commonwealth Games and the 2022 Festival in Birmingham, which will celebrate the collaboration of the science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics sectors.
