London:

Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday canceled a trip to northern England after a relative came down with Covid, officials said, a day after he apologized at a lockdown-breaking party.

A Downing Street spokesman said: “The prime minister will not visit Lancashire today, as a family member has tested positive for coronavirus.”

“He will follow guidance for close contacts who are vaccinated, including daily testing and limiting contact with others.”

In the UK, people who have been fully vaccinated will no longer have to self-isolate after coming into contact with an infected person. But they are advised to “limit close contact with other people outside your home”.

Johnson lives in a Downing Street flat with his wife Carrie and their two young children.

To his critics, Johnson’s conscientious adherence to the rules would now contrast his appearance at a party in Downing Street Gardens in May 2020, when Britain was under strict lockdown.

After several days of stonewalling the scandal, on Wednesday he issued a “heartfelt apology”, acknowledging that lakhs of people had adhered to the lockdown even at the cost of paying last respects to relatives who had died.

But opposition parties and even some conservatives are calling for Johnson’s resignation.
