Prosthetics made at Poole Hospital, UK.

Britain’s Poole Hospital helps patients who have suffered from trauma or diseases and have lost body parts with specially designed prosthetics.

Losing a body part is not only heartbreaking but also painful for any individual. This can be due to an accident, or a disease such as cancer. The loss has a major impact on how the person is viewed and how they try to participate in their day-to-day activities. Poole Hospital in the UK has created stunning “ultra-realistic prosthetics” for trauma survivors who have lost physical limbs, according to a post shared on Instagram by media organization BBC. These prosthetics have brought relief to many individuals.

Prosthetics being made by healthcare staff in the hospital’s maxillofacial prosthetics unit, as shown in a video posted to Instagram by the BBC. “I don’t worry about going out anymore – I lead a normal life,” one of the patients, Philip Sims, who lost his nose to cancer, is heard saying in the video. With the prosthetic nose, Sims exhales an air of excitement and continues, “I’m absolutely crazy with what they can do. I’ve had many noses but it’s winter.”

More than 40 patients at Poole Hospital who have lost limbs due to accidents or cancer are receiving support from the Maxillofacial Prosthetics Clinic. In cases where patients do not have the option of going for reconstructive surgery, the expert team of the hospital creates prosthetic substitutes that are incredibly realistic. Although artificial ears, eyes, nose and fingers built into the unit cannot restore the physical functionality of the body parts, a significant improvement in a patient’s aesthetic appearance has a profound personal impact that can return self-confidence.

Susan Double, who had a magnetic ear implanted, described the amazing experience of seeing herself in the mirror for the first time after the treatment. In the video, she is heard saying, “Because I was without one at that time and then suddenly I became one.” The video has garnered over 5.5 million views since it was shared a day ago.

Prosthetic limbs are created using a mixture of technology, medical science and research, and art. The new body parts are carefully crafted from synthetic materials after extensive conversations with the patient about what works and doesn’t work for them. In addition to sampling the patient’s skin tone and color, prosthetists take impressions of the parts to make them as accurate as possible.
