UN condemns ‘foolish war’ in Ukraine – Times of India

GENEVA: UN rights chief on Tuesday condemned Russia’s “foolish war” Ukraine as he sought to end the “unbearable” civilian suffering caused by the invasion.
Michelle Bachelet Called for the immediate cessation and redress of hostilities for the victims of war, in his last appearance before united nations human rights council,
“As we enter the fifth month of hostilities, the unbearable toll of the conflict in Ukraine continues to grow,” United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said.
“With daily killings, widespread destruction, arbitrary detentions and mass displacements, civilians are bearing the brunt of hostilities with no end in sight.
“The killings, tortures, arbitrary captives in the name of every victim of this senseless war must stop.”
It presented a report on the human rights situation in Ukraine in the context of Russia’s attack from February 24 to May 15.
“The extent of civilian casualties and destruction caused by civilian infrastructure is raising significant concerns that attacks by Russian armed forces are not in compliance with international humanitarian law,” Bachelet said.
“On a much smaller scale, it is also likely that the Ukrainian Armed Forces did not fully comply with the IHL” Eastern parts of the country.”
Bachelet said that as of July 3, more than 10,000 civilian deaths or injuries had been documented across Ukraine, with 335 of the 4,889 dead being children.
