Uncapped David Payne and Luke Wood named in England squad for Netherlands ODI

Left-arm uncapped pacers David Payne and Luke Wood were both named as 50-over world champions on Tuesday, their first one-day international since England appointed Australia’s Matthew Mott as their coach. Named the team.

World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan, who has a back problem, is fit to lead a 14-man squad for the three-match series in the Netherlands next month.

Matches at the VRA Ground in Amstelveen near Amsterdam will take place between the second and third Tests of England’s home series against New Zealand, meaning new Test captains Ben Stokes, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow are all unavailable.

Several England bowlers are currently injured, including World Cup winners Jofra Archer and Mark Wood, but Sam Curran is fit again after a back stress fracture.

With Lancashire’s Wood being called up for the first time and Payne bidding for a debut in the previous squad, the team has five left-arm fast bowlers (Curran, David Willey and Reece Topley are the others).

But there was no room for wicketkeeper-batsman Sam Billings, with Phil Salt drawn behind the stumps with Jason Roy and Jos Buttler replacing Bairstow at the top of the order.

Adil Rashid is the only leg-spinner in the team who has no place for Matt Parkinson.

The series is part of the World Cup Super League, which will help determine the qualifiers for the 2023 World Cup in India.

“I am very excited to be coaching a strong team for my first series in charge,” said Mott, who was previously in charge of Australia’s all-conquering women’s team.

“We have tremendous depth with a mix of youth and experience. We want to continue to play in an expressive style and let our players showcase their skills and firepower.”

Mott said: “Luke Wood deserves his call-up. He has been a consistent performer for Lancashire over the past 12 months and we are monitoring his progress. If he is given a chance I am sure That he will take full advantage of this opportunity.

“It is a historic occasion for the sport and the England men have played against the Netherlands in an ODI series for the first time. We can’t wait to visit Amsterdam and present a show to the thousands of fans who travel to support the team.

The Netherlands are currently involved in a home ODI series against the West Indies.
