With the BJP in power at the Center and a hold on the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), the NPP feels that the NPP should forge an alliance with the saffron party to ensure ease of central support for the state. BJP sources said the party had worked with Conrad Sangma and the previous understanding would help ensure that there is no border conflict and the Northeast remains peaceful.

The NPP, which emerged as the single largest party in the state with votes polled for Thursday’s assembly elections and won two seats, has not ruled out approaching Konrad Sangma for a re-alliance with the BJP. The NPP won 27 of the 59 seats in the state assembly.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Sangma and his Assam counterpart, Himanta Biswa Sarma of the BJP, reportedly met ahead of the election results. Many in the party believe that the BJP has expanded in the Northeast on its own or at the cost of a regional ally. “Unless you are in the government, development schemes aimed at improving the lives of the people will not materialize. We will have no objection to form an alliance and continue in the government.
Unlike BJP, Trinamool Congress with 5 wins is also exploring options to be a part of it Meghalaya Government. Party leader Abhishek Banerjee is reported to be headed to the state, though many believe that only TMC leader and former CM Mukul Sangma can make the alliance possible.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi BJP leaders were asked to campaign in Christian dominated states and seats, reach out to the community and experiment with social engineering. Many in the party believe that Christmas celebrations organized by Union minister John Barla, who is a Christian, and others have yielded results.
