Unemployment in urban areas fell to 9.4% in Jan-March – Times of India

New Delhi: Unemployment The rate in urban areas was 9.4% in the January-March quarter of 2020-21, lower than the 10.3% recorded in the October-December quarter of the previous year, data showed on Thursday. The rate has come down after being in double digits for the last three quarters.
Data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) on Tuesday showed that the unemployment rate for women of all ages rose to 11.8% in the January-March quarter from 13.1% in the October-December quarter. It was 10.5% in the January-March quarter of 2020.
The overall unemployment rate for all ages was 9.1% in the January-March quarter. The strict lockdown imposed to contain the spread of COVID pushed the overall unemployment rate to 20.9% in the April-June quarter of 2020, raising concerns job position across the country. Since the opening of the economy, the job landscape has steadily improved, although the unemployment rate remains high. Many states still display double-digit rates for all age groups.
“Latest PLFS survey The employment for Q4FY21 shows a steady improvement as compared to the previous quarters of FY21. While the overall unemployment rate rose to 9.4% from 10.3% during the quarter, the state-wise data indicates a mixed picture with some advanced states still seeing unemployment rates in double digits,” said Soumya Kanti Ghosh, State said the group’s chief economic advisor in Bank of India.
“Perhaps, the most satisfactory decline in the female unemployment rate was far greater than the male unemployment rate,” Ghosh said. NSO released the quarterly bulletin of the Periodic Labor Force Survey, a key indicator of measurement of labor force participation rate, worker population ratio and unemployment rate.
The unemployment rate is defined as the percentage of unemployed persons in the labor force. PLFS was launched by NSO to estimate employment and unemployment indicators in a short time span of three months for urban areas only in the current weekly position.
Under the CWS, a person is considered unemployed in a week if he did not work for an hour on any day during the reference week, but sought work for at least one hour on any day during the week or was available. to PLFS.
The annual PLFS report includes both Rural and in urban areas whereas the quarterly bulletin is for urban centres.
