New Delhi: The unemployment rate for persons aged 15 years and above declined from 9.8 per cent to 7.2 per cent in urban areas during July-September 2022, the National Statistical Office (NSO) said on Thursday. Unemployment or unemployment rate is defined as the percentage of unemployed persons among the labor force. Unemployment was high in July-September 2021 mainly due to the staggering effect of COVID-related restrictions in the country.

The latest data, based on the Periodic Labor Force Survey, points to a continued economic recovery from the shadow of the pandemic, underlining a decline in the unemployment rate amid an improved labor force participation ratio. The 16th Periodic Labor Force Survey (PLFS) showed that the unemployment rate for persons aged 15 years and above in April-June 2022 was 7.6 per cent in urban areas.

It also showed that the unemployment rate among women (aged 15 years and above) in urban areas declined to 9.4 per cent in July-September, 2022 from 11.6 per cent a year ago. It was 9.5 percent in April-June 2022. Among men, the unemployment rate in urban areas declined to 6.6 per cent in July-September 2022, compared to 9.3 per cent a year ago. It was 7.1 percent in April-June 2022.
The labor force participation rate in the CWS (current weekly status) in urban areas for persons aged 15 years and above increased to 47.9 per cent in the July-September quarter of 2022 from 46.9 per cent in the same period a year ago. In April-June 2022 it was 47.5 percent.
Labor force refers to that part of the population that supplies or offers to supply labor to pursue economic activities for the production of goods and services and, therefore, includes both employed and unemployed persons. NSO launched PLFS in April 2017. Based on the PLFS, a quarterly bulletin is brought out containing estimates of labor force indicators, such as unemployment rate, worker population ratio (WPR), labor force participation rate (LFPR), distribution of workers by broad status in the CWS In the industry of employment and work.
The estimates of unemployed persons in the CWS give an average picture of unemployment in the short run of seven days during the survey period. The labor force, according to the CWS, is the number of persons, either employed or unemployed, on an average in the week preceding the date of the survey. LFPR is defined as the percentage of the population in the labor force. The WPR (in percentage) in CWS in urban areas for persons aged 15 years and above was 44.5 per cent in July-September, 2022, as against 42.3 per cent in the same period a year ago. In April-June, 2022 it was 43.9 percent.
