Edited excerpt:

Question: Are you considering implementing Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on the lines of states like Goa, now that Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh are also examining it?

A: We have asked the officials to investigate it and whether it is suitable for the state. It has come under active consideration after Uttarakhand announced a panel for the same. We believe the decision to implement the UCC is a good one but we are examining it. The message that has gone in favor of UCC from other states is correct. We are not ruling out the possibility of announcing it before the elections. We won’t be in a hurry. We will investigate and see what we can do.

Q: You have lost in the by-elections. Is there anything these losses have taught you?

A: There was also a great deal of sympathy in the by-election results as the term of the incumbent members expired. It has taught us a lot though. We got a chance to plug the loopholes and we will do well in Himachal Pradesh.

Q: Are you banking on your beneficiary schemes as well?

A: We have worked in the social sector and started many schemes. Be it social security pension, Sahara scheme for mentally ill patients. We have decided to give three cylinders to women. If we want private sector investment, we need roads, electricity, land and water. We have started focusing on land bank of 5,000 acres and those who want to invest are welcome.

Question: Have you given credibility to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in your party by accepting the top leadership in Himachal Pradesh?

A: There was a lot of uproar about you and we have seen punctures happening. Their president, the president of the women’s wing all left to accompany us. Conceptually you are zero. Whatever place he has got, it is because of the current political situation. They had to dissolve the Himachal Pradesh unit because they knew that the kind of politics they practice was below Himachal Pradesh. The people of the state do not accept such politics.

Question: AAP has fielded its Punjab MLAs for election work in Kangra and Una region?

A: The state has always chosen either the BJP or the Congress. Third party is also not an option.

Question: The state has a tradition of not repeating the present government. How difficult will these elections be?

A: Elections should be taken seriously and as a challenge. No government has been repeated in 1985 so far. We saw elections in four states. Everyone used to say that these states do not vote for the current elections and yet BJP has come to power.

Question: There are protests in Mandi regarding the new airport.

Answer: Himachal Pradesh is a hilly state and we should give an alternative place to those who are protesting. Today we will sign an MoU with the airport authority on this important project.

Question: The opposition for Himachal Pradesh is in consultation with Prashant Kishor.

Answer: Himachal Pradesh has either voted for BJP or Congress. This is also the political position of the state. Prashant Kishor is advising Congress but it is his issue. BJP is strong in the state. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a deep relationship with the people of Himachal. Despite being a small state, the president of our party is from Himachal.
