Union Berlin top Bundesliga after 1-0 win over Cologne

Union Berlin climbed to the top of the Bundesliga on Sunday with a scheduled 1-0 win in Cologne. Union, who are unbeaten this season, held defending champions Bayern Munich to a draw at the end of last week.

The visitors started the game at a brisk pace in Cologne to take the lead in just four minutes.

Debutant goalkeeper Lennart Grill bowled a length ball towards Jordan Sibachchu, which went to Sheraldo Baker running on the edge of the box.

Becker’s cross was swung into the bottom corner of his own net by Cologne defender Timo Hubers.

Exactly four minutes later, referee Benjamin Courtesy awarded Union a penalty for a handball, but Cologne keeper Marvin Schwabe easily saved Sibachechu’s effort.

Baker had the ball again in the back of the net a minute later, but his brilliant strike was dismissed for offside.

Despite dominating, Cologne was unable to find a way out with the often dangerous union on the counter.

Cologne went down to 10 men in the 81st minute when Luka Killian picked up his second yellow card for a tactical foul on Andras Schaefer.

Cologne’s first defeat of the season left Union and Bayern as the only two unbeaten sides in the Bundesliga.

In late Sunday’s game, Freiburg have a chance to take the top spot when they welcome Borussia Moenchengladbach to the Europa Park stadium.
