DIG Upendra Agarwal, who is heading the SIT, said on Saturday night, “He has been arrested for not cooperating in the investigation and giving evasive replies.”
Around 10.30 am, Ashish entered the Lakhimpur Kheri crime branch office through the back door, which was attended by more than 10 policemen. He was accompanied by two lawyers Awadhesh Kumar Singh. Jitendra Singh. In another notice put up outside his house on Friday, Ashish was asked to appear at 11 am. His lawyer Singh said in the morning, “My client has come with video evidence to show that he was not there that day (the place of murder).” They also reportedly submitted 12 affidavits of people stating that Ashish was not at the Banbirpur violence site that day.
As internet services were again suspended, police were called to Lakhimpur Kheri from neighboring districts and SSB personnel were deployed. BJP workers from across the district gathered at the party office in Lakhimpur city. In the evening, suddenly security was increased around the district jail and collectorate.
Asked if it was a preparation for arrest, ADG (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar Earlier in the evening told TOI that he “didn’t know”. “The local police has taken its decision to maintain law and order,” he said. However, a senior administration official said that security arrangements were made to prepare for both the situations. “Whether he is arrested or not, we are ready for both. We have ensured necessary security to maintain law and order. The decision on his arrest is with the SIT,” the officer told TOI.
Ashish was finally arrested around 11 pm. The police was preparing to take him before the remand magistrate at the time of filing the report.
