Universities will use ‘normalized’ CUET scores for merit list, says UGC chief

UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar has said that universities will prepare rank lists for admission to undergraduate courses on the basis of “normalized” CUET scores and not on the basis of percentage or “raw marks”. Kumar says that these marks have been normalized to provide equal opportunities to the students writing the exam in the same subject.

Kumar, while talking to news agency PTI, said that the scores have been normalized to provide equal opportunities to the students who took the exam in the same subject on different days or in different shifts.

He said, “The rank list will be prepared by the universities using the normalized NTA scores and not on the basis of percentage. The scores have been normalized to provide a level playing field to the students as they have scored one on different days. The exam was written in the same subject.

Kumar further said, “The normalization of CUET scores has been done for each subject separately for which the exam was conducted in multiple shifts.”

On the normalization formula used, he said that the “equipercentile method” has been used to obtain the score. The formula was a derived panel consisting of professors from the Indian Statistical Institute, IIT Delhi and University of Delhi.

NTA Director (Exams) Sadhna Parashar said, “For many subjects, CUET-UG was conducted in different shifts. Since the question paper of any subject in different shifts is different and it is quite possible That despite all the best possible efforts to maintain equality, the difficulty level of different question papers, administered in different sessions may not be same or same.

He said, “Some candidates end up attempting relatively difficult questions as compared to other sets. Candidates who attempted a comparatively difficult test are likely to get less marks than those who attempted the easier test. ”

On the need for normalization of marks, he said, “Scores of students in shifts are not directly comparable. Hence, there was a need to normalize marks across all shifts to make them amenable to such comparison.”

Earlier in the day, the results of CUET UG 2022 were declared on the official website of NTA at cuet.samarth.ac along with ntaresults.nic.in and nta.ac.in.

Each university will decide on its own admission criteria and students will be taken on the basis of CUET score.
