UP Assembly by-elections: Main contest between BJP and SP in Gola Gokarnath seat

The by-election for Gola Gokarnath assembly constituency in Uttar Pradesh is set to be a contest between the ruling BJP and the Samajwadi Party as the Congress and the BSP were swept out of the electoral battle. A total of seven candidates have filed their nominations for the elections for which the filing of nominations ended on Friday.

The by-election to this seat was held on September 6 due to the death of sitting MLA Arvind Giri. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded his son Aman Giri for the by-election while the Samajwadi Party (SP) has given ticket to former MLA Vinay Tiwari. ,

District Congress Committee president Prahlad Patel told PTI that his party’s leadership has decided not to field its candidate due to preparations for elections in other states.

On the last day of filing the form, Aman Giri and Vinay Tiwari filed another set form. Two more candidates filed nominations.

With this, a total of seven candidates are in the fray for the by-elections. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on October 15 while the last date for withdrawal of nominations is October 17.

The constituency came into existence in 2012 when the delimitation exercise was done Election commission.

In 2012, Vinay Tiwari won the election by defeating Simmi Bano of BSP by a margin of 19,329 votes. Arvind Giri, who then contested on a Congress ticket, finished third.

During the 2017 elections, Arvind Giri joined the BJP and won the election against Tiwari. BSP candidate BS Kanojia came third. Giri had retained his seat in the assembly elections held earlier this year. Giri secured 1,26,534 votes defeating Vinay Tiwari by a margin of 29,294 votes. Tiwari got 97,240 votes.

The bypolls will be held on November 3 while the counting of votes will take place on November 6.
