An MP/MLA court in Muzaffarnagar recently sentenced a BJP MLA to two years’ imprisonment in this case.

The Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Monday declared the seat of BJP MLA Vikram Singh Saini vacant following his disqualification following his conviction by a court in the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots case.

An MP/MLA court in Muzaffarnagar had recently sentenced a BJP MLA to two years’ imprisonment in this case.

The Assembly Secretariat on Monday issued a notification declaring the Khatauli seat of Muzaffarnagar, which is represented by Saini, vacant.

The Representation of the People Act states that any person sentenced to two years or more shall be disqualified “from the date of such conviction” and shall be disqualified for six years after serving time in prison.

RLD Speaker Jayant Choudhary had questioned the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker for not disqualifying the BJP MLA after his conviction in the case.
