UP Election Result 2022: Know All About Losing Deposits and Hung Assembly

Counting of votes is underway for the assembly elections in five states- Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur. Uttar Pradesh and Manipur went to polls in seven and two phases respectively, while the other three states went to polls in one phase. Now, as result day has arrived, people will surely hear words like ‘hung assembly’, ‘lose deposits’, and other election terminology.

The Representation of the People Act, 1951 mandates each candidate to deposit a certain amount with the Election Commission for contesting elections. This amount is different for parliamentary and assembly elections. To contest for the seat of MP, a candidate has to deposit Rs 25,000, while for MLA candidates an amount of Rs 10,000 has to be deposited.

A candidate needs to secure at least 1/6th of the vote in the constituency they are contesting in order to get their deposit back. Candidates, who fail to obtain the required number of votes, lose their deposit.

What do you understand by hung assembly?

A hung assembly is a situation where all the political parties in a particular state fail to reach the majority mark. For example, Uttar Pradesh has 403 assembly seats. And since the majority mark is one in more than 50 percent of the seats, the number is 202. If any political party is not able to get 202 seats in UP, then it is called as hung assembly.

In such a situation, the party which gets the majority of seats, tries to form the government with the support of other parties.

What is the majority mark in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur?

As mentioned above, the majority mark in Uttar Pradesh is 202. Punjab has 117 assembly seats, and the majority mark in the state is 59. Similarly, Uttarakhand has 70 assembly seats, and needs to win at least 36 constituencies for a party to cross the line. Majority mark. Goa has 40 seats, so the majority mark is 21 seats.

The majority mark for the northeastern state of Manipur is 31 as it has 60 assembly seats.
