UP Elections 2022: All political parties agree to hold elections on time, says EC

Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra said in a statement on Thursday that political parties want to hold elections in Uttar Pradesh on time amid the rise in omicron cases in India. The Election Commission chief said that “representatives of all political parties met us and told us that the elections should be conducted on time following all the COVID-19 protocols”.

The UP assembly elections are likely to be held in February 2022. The polling timings will be from 8 am to 6 pm, Chandra said.

“Voting during the assembly elections will be held from 8 am to 6 pm on the date of polling,” he said in a media statement.

In addition, “VVPATs are to be installed at all polling stations. Live webcasting facility will be available at around 1 lakh polling stations to ensure transparency in the election process”, said the chief of election commissioner on Uttar Pradesh elections.

Talking about the fall in the voting percentage in the election, the Election Commission said, “61% voter turnout was recorded in the 2017 UP assembly election. In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, 59% voter turnout was recorded in UP. This is a matter of concern. That’s why in a state where there is high political awareness among the people, the voting percentage is low.”

A delegation of the Election Commission met district and divisional level officials in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday to review the preparations for next year’s state assembly elections.

Yesterday the delegation held meeting with various political parties. Representatives of BJP, Congress, Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Lok Dal and Communist Party of India met the delegation.

During the meetings, the BJP demanded that women security personnel be deployed at every polling station, while the SP sought separate lists of disabled voters and voters above 80 years of age. The RLD had demanded that the VVPAT slips be recounted.

In the 2017 assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 312 out of 403 seats, while the Samajwadi Party (SP) won 47 seats, the Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) won 19 seats and Congress could only manage to win. seven seats. Rest of the seats were occupied by other candidates.
