UP MLC elections: Voting underway for 36 seats of Upper House, CM Adityanath casts his vote

Voting is underway for 36 Upper House seats of the State Legislative Council in Uttar Pradesh. The seats are spread over 35 local officials’ constituencies. Counting of votes will take place on April 12.

Nine MLCs have been elected unopposed from the constituencies of eight local authorities. These seats are Badaun, Hardoi, Kheri, Mirzapur-Sonbhadra, Banda-Hamirpur, Aligarh, Bulandshahr and Mathura-Etah-Mainpuri.

BJP is eyeing to become the single largest party in the Legislative Council. “After almost 4 decades, a ruling party will get a majority in the Legislative Council… Anti-land mafia task force taking back encroached land from mafia, we will not demolish the shanties of poor on encroached land till we give them Do not rehabilitate,” Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said after casting his vote on Saturday morning.

Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav on Friday demanded special arrangements to maintain fairness and transparency in the elections. He said that the way CM Adityanath and other BJP leaders are claiming to win all the seats, it puts a question mark on the intention of the government.

“For the sanctity of democracy and fair voting, we hope that the Election Commission will discharge its constitutional responsibility. We hope that the ruling party will not be allowed to rigging tomorrow’s polling.

Yadav said, “The BJP government wants to impose opposition-free and monopolistic rule on Uttar Pradesh by threatening and luring village heads, BDCs and other voters through officials. This conduct of BJP is a danger bell for democracy.”

According to the Election Commission, the BJP got the highest 41.3 percent votes in the assembly elections, followed by the Samajwadi Party with 32 percent votes.
