There was massive eviction during the counting of votes for the standing committee elections of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

New Delhi :

The counting of votes for the election of six members of the Standing Committee, an important body of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), was today marred after the BJP objected to the functioning of one vote. Members of the first Gira Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and BJP climbed on tables and raised slogans against each other at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi House. Later a scuffle also took place. There was a fight between the councillors. A woman’s hair was also pulled. BJP members said they would not allow a recount.

The BJP obstructed the counting of votes after one of the mayor’s votes was declared invalid. However, the mayor retorted by saying that the result would be declared without a vote. After this chaos spread in the House. Councilors from both sides threatened each other, campaigned late and raised slogans. The kurtas of some councilors were seen getting torn. A councilor also fell.

At least 242 of the 250 corporators of the Aam Aadmi Party-ruled Municipal Corporation of Delhi voted to elect six members of the MCD’s standing committee. The Standing Committee is a powerful body of the Municipal Corporation which decides how the funds are to be used and on which projects.

The mayor’s decision came earlier this week after a delay of two months after AAP leader Shelly Oberoi decided to cast her vote. Due to this, he came under target of all the affiliated members. The BJP corporators shouted at him, “Tumhe hosh nahi hai.”

Some BJP members chanted “Jai Shri Ram” and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His rivals from the Aam Aadmi Party hit back, chanting “Aam Aadmi Party Zindabad, Arvind Kejriwal Zindabad”.

Seven allies are in the fray for the standing committee election. Aam Aadmi Party has nominated Amil Malik, Raminder Kaur, Mohini Jinwal and Sarika Choudhary. BJP has fielded Kamaljeet Sehrawat and Pankaj Luthra. Independent colleague Janendra Singh Daral, who joined BJP, is also an ally.

Mayor Style Oberoi said- One side is ready for recounting while the other side is not ready, so now I am not doing recounting. The result is being prepared on the basis of an invalid vote.
