23rd seed Nick Kyrgios crashed out of the US Open 2022 on Tuesday, September 6. The 27-year-old lost 5-7, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7-3) to Karen Khachanov of Russia. ), 4-6 in the men’s singles quarter-finals at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Kyrgios was brimming with confidence after beating world number one Daniil Medvedev in the round of 16 after a four-setter at the same spot.

However, he could not advance his A-game against 27th seed Khachanov. Kyrgios excelled in the first serve, scoring 79 percent. However, he faltered in second place with a win percentage of 47.

Kyrgios was also flattered to cheat as he made 58 unforced errors compared to his opponent’s 31. He pulled off 75 winners, 13 more than Khachanov, but his efforts were not enough to advance to the semi-finals.

Both Khachanov and Kyrgios were superb as far as the aces are concerned, scoring 30 and 31 runs respectively. But the latter scored five double faults compared to his opponent’s three, adding to Kyrgios’ misery.

Back in 2020, Kyrgios defeated Khachanov in the third round of the Australian Open at the Rod Laver Arena. Almost two years later, Karen managed to return the favor to the Australian.

Khachanov is now set to take on in-form Kasper Rudd, who defeated Matteo Berrettini in the quarterfinals to make his second Grand Slam semi-final this year.

Meanwhile, Moscow-born Khachanov entered his first Grand Slam semi-final.
