Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections 2022: All you need to know about the first phase of polling

The battle for Uttar Pradesh will begin tomorrow with polling for 58 assembly seats in 11 districts in the western part of the state.

Campaigning in the politically crucial constituencies going to polls in the first round of seven phases of elections in the politically crucial state ended last evening.

Voting will begin at 7 am in these constituencies as per the guidelines of the Election Commission of India to ensure COVID-safe elections.

Voting will end at 6 pm.

The counting of votes will take place on March 10.

The exit polls for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections will be held on March 7 after the conclusion of the last phase of polling in UP.

The ministers whose fate will be decided in the first phase include Shrikant Sharma, Suresh Rana, Sandeep Singh, Kapil Dev Agarwal, Atul Garg and Chaudhary Laxmi Narayan.

Campaigning for the first phase was restricted to the virtual medium due to restrictions on road shows and physical rallies in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Leading the campaign for the BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi advocated a double-engined government for rapid growth, attacking the Samajwadi Party-Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) alliance.

While Union Home Minister Amit Shah and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath tried to shed light again on the alleged “exodus” of Hindus from Kairana before 2017, SP president Akhilesh Yadav claimed that people tried to oust the BJP from power. The mind has been made up.

The SP-RLD alliance has focused its election campaign on farmers’ issues and attacked Adityanath over his poll promises.

BSP chief Mayawati, who started campaigning late, reminded people of her government’s past record of law and order.

The Congress, led by its general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, has generated interest in door-to-door campaigns.

Districts where polling will be held

Elections will be held in Shamli, Hapur, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Baghpat, Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, Mathura and Agra districts.

The first phase will cover Jat-dominated areas of western UP, from where farmers actively participated in the agitation against the Centre’s three agricultural laws in the national capital.

623 candidates are in the fray in the first phase and around 2.27 crore people are eligible to vote in this phase.

In 2017, BJP got 53 out of 58 seats, while Samajwadi Party and BSP got two seats each.

One seat went to the account of Rashtriya Lok Dal.

Those who have valid identity proof will be allowed to cast their vote. Voters are required to bring the EPIC to the polling station to establish their identity.

In case a voter is not able to bring his/her EPIC card, he/she has to present any of the 12 alternative photo ID cards which are – Service Identity Card with Photo for Employees of Central and State Governments – PSUs and Public Limited Companies, Passport, Driving License, PAN Card, Aadhar Card, MGNREGA Job Card, Health Insurance Smart Card issued under the schemes of Ministry of Labor, Passbook with photographs issued by Banks or Post Offices, Smart Card issued by RGI under NPR, Pension with photo Documents, Official Identity Card for MPs, MLAs and MLCs.
