Happy Uttarayan 2023: In Sanskrit, the word ‘uttara’ means north, and ‘ayana’ means movement. Thus Uttarayan refers to the movement of the Sun towards the Northern Hemisphere. The term Uttarayan is used by the Gujarati community to refer to Makar Sankranti. Along with the holy worship, people fly kites to mark the special day.

Uttarayan Punya Kaal: Start and End Time

This year, the Uttarayan festival is falling on Sunday, January 15. Punya Kaal, which means the auspicious time for worship and holy bath will start at 7.15 am. Drik Panchang tells that Uttarayan Sankranti Muhurta is starting on January 14 at 8.57 pm. At the same time, Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on 15 January.

Uttarayan Puja Vidhi

Dharba grass is used during the worship of Uttarayan, which is cut into six pieces each 4 inches long. Each piece should be kept straight on a plate and decorated with flowers by applying a paste of sandalwood powder. Coins should be placed on the top, bottom and middle part of the grass.

A paste of white rice flour and sesame oil should be mixed with a splash of water on the palm of the right hand. Then it should be poured on Dharba grass and coins. Once done, the devotee can use the coin or throw it in a water body.
