It is alleged that the Indian Navy’s action was worse than the attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy

Vaiko, general secretary of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, on Tuesday condemned the attack on Tamil Nadu fishermen last week by the Indian Navy in the Palk Gulf in Indian waters.

Alleging that the attack by the Indian Navy and the treatment of the fishermen was worse than the attacks on the fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy, he said that the Indian Navy fired at the fishermen despite the fact that their The boat had the national flag.

However, in a statement issued earlier, the Indian Navy said it fired warning shots “as per standard operating procedures” after the boat failed to stop despite repeated warnings.

One of the fishermen from Vanagiri in Mayiladuthurai, K. Virvel received injuries on his abdomen and thigh in the firing.

Mr Vaiko said that the fishermen were attacked with iron rods and made to kneel. He alleged that he was humiliated, kicked and scolded when he told Navy personnel that they did not speak Hindi.

He said such attacks on fishermen in Indian waters are unjustified and unforgivable. He alleged that due to the statements of Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the importance of Hindi, there has been a tendency to treat those who do not speak Hindi as outsiders.

Apart from taking strict action against those responsible for the attack, Mr Vaiko said that the central government should apologize to the fishermen of Tamil Nadu.
