Value creation through circular economy

The closing panel discussion at the first SAP Presents Mint Sustainability Action Summit 2022 brought together leaders from several industry to share their initiatives for a circular economy. “Currently, only 9% of what we take in from the earth is recycled and put into the value chain. If we just double this number, the mitigation of climate change doubles. Therefore, it is very important to take circular economy as a strategy as it will help in reducing resource consumption, and also address emissions at source,” said Avinav Prasad, Associate Director, Deloitte India.

According to Anil Kumar Makkar, manufacturing director, JK Tire & Industries, the circular economy in India is not a complete circle yet, but it is close. “The first step in starting the circular economy is to start using recycled materials as inputs. Number two, will extend the lifecycle of the products we use. Most importantly, we have to make consumers aware of it.”

“The customer plays a very important role in driving the circular economy. At PepsiCo, we are campaigning to promote or promote an understanding of plastic waste management. India is a price sensitive market. Are customers ready to pay that premium on recycled products today?” asked Juhi Gupta, head of sustainability at PepsiCo, India.

“From a consumer point of view, careful consumption is one of the things that is very important and so is the segregation and sorting. We also saw this through some of the campaigns we are running across the country,” said Kamlesh Kholia, Sustainability Manager, Tetra Pak India That along with proper awareness there has been an increase in the collection of waste.

“Today, in many of the interventions and surveys we have conducted, we have found that people have a very high degree of desire to be sustainable, which is underpinned by commercial and affordable construction. But more importantly, the lack of information access is addressed. There is a lack of awareness for affordability,” said Mahesh Pratap Singh, Head of Sustainability, Flipkart.
