As of Tuesday, doctors had said that his condition was “critical but stable”, and on Wednesday, the IAF said in a tweet: “The IAF is deeply saddened to inform about the passing away of brave Group Captain Varun Singh, who died this morning. Died. Injuries sustained in the helicopter crash on 08 Dec 21. The Indian Air Force expresses its deepest condolences and stands firmly with the bereaved family.

Group Captain Singh was traveling with General Rawat as his Liaison Officer for a visit to the Defense Services Staff College (DSSC) in Wellington, where the CDS was to deliver a lecture.
He was awarded the Shaurya Chakra in August for averting a possible mid-air accident after a major technical snag in his Tejas light combat aircraft last year.
