Vice President’s election to be held on August 6; Last date for filing nominations July 19

The election for the post of Vice President will be held on August 6 Election commission India was announced on Wednesday, adding that the counting of votes – if necessary – will be conducted on the same day. The last date for filing nominations is July 19.

Venkaiah Naidu is the outgoing Vice President and his term will end on August 10. The Vice President of India, who also serves as the Speaker of the Rajya Sabha, is elected by the members of the Electoral College, which includes members from both houses. Parliament according to the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote.

The Electoral College for the 16th Vice-President Election consists of 233 elected members of the Rajya Sabha, 12 nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and 543 elected members of the Lok Sabha, the Election Commission said in a press note.
