Doctors should avoid giving steroids to COVID-19 patients, the government has said in its revised clinical guidelines for coronavirus treatment, its task force chief for drug overuse during the second wave have expressed regret. The revised guidelines state that drugs such as steroids may increase the risk of secondary infections such as invasive mucormycosis or ‘black fungus’ when used too quickly, at high doses or for longer periods of time.
