The Centre’s decision to rename the historic Rajpath and Center Vista Lawn in Delhi from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate as ‘Kartavya Path’ has sharply divided opinion. As far as the BJP government is concerned, this naming is part of the Prime Minister’s larger message to do away with the symbols of our colonial past. The prime minister has also been emphasizing on the duties rather than the rights of the citizens – all this is behind the renaming of Rajpath, say government officials. The full emphasis on duties as opposed to rights has become more and more common in Mr Modi’s public statements. Is it an attempt to seek the loyalty of citizens and shift the narrative?
