Vidhan Sabha by-elections 2022 News Live Updates: Voting begins in 7 seats of six states; Andheri East, Munugode bypoll in focus

Telangana BJP president Bandi Sanjay was taken into preventive custody after he sat on a dharna along with other BJP cadres accusing TRS of violating the model code of conduct.

Sanjay alleged that non-local Telangana Rashtra Samithi leaders and outsiders supporting the party are still hiding in Munugode despite the orders of the Election Commission. He accused the police and the Election Commission of working for the TRS.

Of the seven seats where by-polls are being held, BJP and Congress have two seats each, while BJD, Shiv Sena and RJD have one seat each. Though the victory in the bypolls will not affect his position in the assemblies, regional parties have launched an aggressive campaign to thwart the BJP’s challenge.

Andheri (East) by-election

In Maharashtra’s Andheri (East), the BJP has pulled out of the race after the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena faction fielded the wife of its deceased MLA Ramesh Latke from the constituency.

Rutuja Latke is expected to secure an easy victory in the election, the first since the recent split in the Shiv Sena following the rebellion of Eknath Shinde, who replaced Thackeray as the chief minister of Maharashtra.

Bihar’s Mokama by-election

Bihar’s Mokama and Gopalganj bypolls will be the first election after the Nitish Kumar-led JD(U) broke ties with the BJP in August and joined hands with the RJD again. These seats were occupied by RJD and BJP respectively.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar urged the voters of Mokama to support the RJD candidate and his former hero Ananth Kumar Singh’s wife Neelam Devi, whose disqualification necessitated the bypoll.

Kumar appealed in a video message after he was ruled out of the campaign due to injury. Kumar said, “I myself could not come, but I appeal to all the people of Mokama to ensure a landslide victory for the grand alliance candidate Neelam Devi, who is contesting on RJD’s Toofan Chirag.”

Deputy CM and RJD’s successor Tejashwi Yadav, however, led from the front and addressed several rallies.

Ananth Kumar Singh was disqualified earlier this year for his conviction in a case related to the recovery of arms and explosives from his residence. BJP has nominated Sonam Devi, wife of local bahubali Lalan Singh, who is opposing Anant Singh from this seat.

Bihar’s Gopalganj by-election

The BJP has fielded Kusum Devi, wife of late party MLA Subhash Singh, from Gopalganj. The RJD has fielded Mohan Gupta, while Lalu Yadav’s brother-in-law Sadhu Yadav’s wife Indira Yadav is contesting as a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate.

Telangana by-elections

The Election Commission has asked Telangana’s Chief Electoral Officer to keep a “close watch” on Munugode assembly constituency amid allegations of attempts to induce voters through “various enforcement agencies”.

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) alleged that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate K Rajagopal Reddy transferred Rs 5.24 crore from the account of his family-owned firm to 23 people and entities within the constituency. I denied.

The Election Commission on Saturday barred Telangana Energy Minister Guntakandala Jagadeesh Reddy from campaigning for 48 hours for violating the model code of conduct, as he allegedly sought to stop welfare schemes if he did not vote for the ruling TRS candidate. was threatened.

TRS, recently renamed as Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), aims to demonstrate its dominance in state politics and go to the national level with big wins here. A defeat would not only hamper its national plans but would also encourage the opposition ahead of the assembly elections.

Meanwhile, the BJP is expected to give a boost to its plans to emerge as an alternative to the TRS with a victory in Munugode. The party is at a high during the last two years following its victories in the Dubak and Huzurabad assembly by-elections and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) election.

While 47 candidates are in the fray, the main contest is confined to Reddy, who is seeking re-election on a BJP ticket after quitting the Congress, Kusukuntala Prabhakar Reddy of the former TRS and Palvai Shravanthi of the Congress.

The BJP had deployed Union Minister G Kishan Reddy, state unit president and MP Bandi Sanjay Kumar, party MLAs Eatala Rajendra and M Raghunandan Rao along with other leaders for the campaign.

The TRS also raised the pitch with several state ministers, MLAs and other leaders covering every inch of Munugode. TRS working president KT Rama Rao even announced that he would “adopt” the constituency and personally focus on its development.

Congress candidate Palvai Shravanthi relies on the goodwill of his late father Palavai Govardhan Reddy, who served as Munugode MLA and MP.

Gola Gorakhnath seat in Uttar Pradesh fell vacant after the death of BJP MLA Arvind Giri on 6 September. Haryana’s Adampur assembly by-election

Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar is actively campaigning for the Adampur assembly by-election in Haryana’s Hisar district, where the grandson of former chief minister Bhajan Lal is among 22 candidates.

The bypoll was necessitated after Bhajan Lal’s younger son Kuldeep Bishnoi resigned as MLA from the seat and switched from Congress to BJP in August. Bishnoi’s son Bhavya is contesting the bypoll as a BJP candidate.

BJP, Congress, Indian National Lok Dal and Aam Aadmi Party are among the major parties contesting the by-elections. The BJP held a rally in the constituency on Tuesday, which was addressed by Chief Minister Khattar and other leaders of the BJP and its ally JJP.

Haryana Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala campaigned for Bhavya, leaving behind the political rivalry between the Bhajanlal and Devilal families. The JJP leader is the great-grandson of Devi Lal.

Congress leaders, including Bhupinder Singh Hooda and state unit chief Uday Bhan, held several election meetings on the last day of campaigning, while the AAP held a roadshow. INLD also held a rally. INLD has fielded Congress rebel Kurda Ram Numberdar.

AAP nominated Satendra Singh, who had parted ways with the BJP after being with the Congress earlier as well. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also campaigned in Adampur.

By-election in Odisha’s Dhamnagar

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had on Monday addressed voters in Dhamnagar through virtual mode and promised that five years of work would be completed in 18 months.

Patnaik, who is also the president of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), urged him to elect a woman from the seat as “mothers work more efficiently”.

The BJD has fielded lone woman Abanti Das out of the total five candidates. The by-election had to be held due to the death of BJP MLA Vishnu Charan Sethi. On the basis of sympathy votes, the saffron party has fielded Sethi’s son Suryavanshi Suraj.

In the panchayat and civic polls held in February and April this year, the BJD won all six Zilla Parishad seats and nine out of 11 wards of the Dhamnagar Notified Area Council (NAC). The party has also won all the bypolls since 2019.

“I am optimistic that people will repeat it,” Patnaik said.

The BJD’s official candidate is facing a rebel as its former MLA Rajendra Das is in the fray as an independent. Both the BJD and the BJP have accused each other of violating the model code of conduct and lodged complaints with the Election Commission.
