Ahmedabad:

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said on Friday that his government was strictly dealing with those who “trapped” Hindu girls and got away with them.

Addressing a gathering of the Maldhari community, whose traditional occupation is animal husbandry, in the Vasihanodevi circle area of Ahmedabad, Mr. Rupani said that the BJP government in the state has also taken strict action against those involved in cow slaughter.

“My government brought many laws with strict provisions. Be it a law to protect cows from slaughter, a law to stop land grabbing or a law to punish those involved in chain-snatching,” he said.

“We also brought a law to stop ‘love jihad’. We are strictly dealing with those who implicate Hindu girls and run away with them,” he said.

The Chief Minister was speaking after laying the foundation stone of the planned building of Raika Education Charitable Trust.

The Gujarat Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Act, 2021, which was passed by the Assembly in April and notified on June 15, provides for stringent punishment for coercion or ‘cheating’ through marriage.

Last month, the Gujarat High Court had stayed some controversial sections of the law.
