The joy of buying a new electric scooter soon turned into a big tragedy for K Shiv Kumar’s family. The forty-year-old had kept the scooter’s battery on charge at night when it exploded and the room caught fire. Shiv Kumar died in the fire, while his wife and two children suffered burns. The incident highlights the risks associated with the batteries of some electric scooters that catch fire or explode either due to faulty parts or due to the scorching heat in India. Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has issued a warning to manufacturers to address quality issues in the wake of reports of battery fires from across the country. The minister said the government would take action after an expert panel constituted to probe the fire incidents submits its report.
