‘Vikram’ movie review: Kamal Haasan sees Fahadh Faasil and Vijay Sethupathi having fun in Lokesh Cinematic Universe

The new ‘Vikram’ disappoints fans of the 1986 original and could have been a standalone film with Fahadh Faasil, carrying on the agent’s legacy like the James Bond films.

A new era has started in Tamil cinema. Lokesh Kanagaraj, a veteran filmmaker of four films, has opened the door to a new cinematic universe that points to wondrous possibilities. Vikram As the first big step. There has never been a filmmaker before Lokesh who has steered the conversation in the right direction to deliver a true cinematic experience. Before Lokesh, the cinematic experience meant grand views and unnecessary embellishments for a star massaging the male crowd. But this filmmaker is committed to giving you a certain level of experience.

He has a certain taste, visual taste and a certain style in the way he writes and directs. He accomplished this cinematic experience with ease in a spectacular cathoOne pure style film Which had the flavor of a healthy Hollywood thriller. to like pace on drugs. He gave us the teaser of this new Cinematic Universe master, I wrote about the Vijay-starrer the review, “This mouthwatering prospect of tying two different films from two different eras, is fascinating — in theory. and if master What Lokesh can do for a Vijay film, one smiles wondering what one can expect from him VathiIn VikramThis mouth-watering prospect is, unfortunately, still a theory. For, what felt organic and thrilling cathofeels weak and helpless Vikram,

Martin Scorsese goodfellas is a cinema experience, as is Marvel’s avengers, as some would argue. A Scorsese fan, Lokesh earlier followed the path of his mentors. but with Vikram, he plays it safely and as per the demands of the market. for, the world Vikram is an extension of catho and picks up three months after the events of the latter film. Trying to build a franchise is not a problem. The question concerns more than why.

Vikram

Cast: Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil, Kalidas Jayaram, Gayatri and Suriya

Director: Lokesh Kanagaraji

Story: Amar and his team of Black Squad tackle high-profile murders that lead them to two men: Santhanam, a drug kingpin and a ghost.

Do not get me wrong. everything about Vikram Good – except Kamal Haasan. Why do you need a man for this movie? Why do you make a film with Kamal when you don’t even have the facility to register and feel his presence? Why? Vikram (1986)? It could have been any other film. Of course, we get the logical reasoning behind using the brand Vikram, But does Kamal’s original film have any relevance to the new one? No way. You could have featured Kamal as an agent and the film would still have worked great. New Vikram Could still have been a standalone film where Amar (Fahd Faasil who is absolutely terrifying) carries on Vikram’s legacy like in James Bond films. The open-ended climax points to that possibility. As fans of the original film and Kamal Haasan, you feel disappointed. The disappointment comes from the fact that Lokesh has failed to realize the true potential of his idol as both an actor and an action star. Still, there’s a lot to chew on.

For an action-thriller to click, it has to be a well-oiled machine. Vikram That’s a machine. Right from the start, it’s a one-minute thrill ride with a battalion of characters. As you know, the script of the film was born out of Kamal’s idea – that of a hero. During the leisurely first half, which is packed with lots of layers, it’s up to the hunt for a hero. As a writer-director, Lokesh does a neat job at the world-building exercise and maintains the intrigue. The movie confuses you after a point and you try to wrap your head around the proceedings, watching what happens. He Shocking but brave opening sequence.

Vikram There is an unusual opening. Definitely unusual for a Kamal Haasan film. It begins with the song ‘Pathala Pathala’, which seems to have been deliberately inserted just for the sake of it. Except for this oddly placed song, the film moves on and not a single moment is wasted in the long drawn out first half. Lokesh should be as much a Christopher Nolan fan as he is Scorsese. A lot of scenes remind you of Nolan’s films. We actually get Theory-like sequence and voiceover like bane in it. There are lots of references to masks and revealing identities. In charge of this unmasking is Immortal, who leads an uncountable team of Black Squad. He is assigned by the police department to investigate a series of high-profile murders in the department, which leads to a man, Santhanam (Vijay Sethupathi, who is, of course, terrifying). Santhanam runs a drug empire. He faces heat from a recent drug bust, which is a loss. catho, Anything else will spoil the fun.

Movies about RAW agents and their sacrifices have become a sub-genre. We’ve seen it a thousand times. Still, something about it continues to fascinate us. Case in point, it features Kamal reintroducing his semi-Bond character, Vikram. tone and mood Vikram quite stressful catho, And like the latter, there are plenty of whistle-worthy moments featuring minor characters that take you by a pleasant surprise and score. There is a special scene in the second half which none of us saw coming. Of course, old Tamil songs have their drawbacks. My favorite song is ‘Kalaviya Selvama Veerama’ Saraswati Shabatham And Vijay Sethupathi raised his hand in a funny way.

Vikram Really comes alive after the adrenaline-filled interval scene. Action is the strength of Lokesh and the second half has impressive stunts (stunt director is Unbrev Masters) and Girish Gangadharan has a decent camera work. Jallikattu fame. Still, something is lacking. and that some Takes us back to the lotus. You can see what Lokesh’s struggle has to do with Kamal’s character of Vikram. There’s not enough beef to feed a lion – in this case, there are three brilliant actors. The point of the script must have been this: Amar has to find the ghost through whom he finds Santhanam. But for Vikram was all guns blazing, it needed a strong reason, not just a personal loss. Even in the old film, Vikram was not a sentimental character. And yet Lokesh suffer again In emotional scenes.

This brings us here: No other actor in Indian cinema can cry like Kamal Haasan. Duration. You can’t compete with it. What is slim in writing, Kamal deadlifts with his acting skills. Just look at the guy where he’s looking at the smoky-eyed kid, you can’t help but feel a lump in your throat. We are talking about such an actor. Somewhere, you want it to be 60% Lokesh and 40% Kamal film.

Vijay Sethupathi, on the other hand, is notable as Santhanam. maybe after a long time we See The effort he has put into playing a character and nothing short of Sethupathi-ness. But unlike his Bhavani masterThe Santhanam is made of wood for the most part. His character is defined by his actions, but that doesn’t mean he’s powerful.

there are two heroes VikramFahad Faasil and Anirudh. When there are no gunshots or deafening explosions, Anirudh’s background score does the talking. The entire film is of Fahad. He is immortal and magnetic as a scene-stealer. The final part of the film hints at the expansion of the universe with Suriya and Fahadh. It’s exciting to think about what that movie could be.

Explaining the basics: Kamal has it all. VikramFor him it is like chewing a betel leaf and spitting out its stem. But Kamal’s decision to leave behind and leave behind his superstar image at this stage of his career has a major flaw. Looks like Kamal has finally made up his mind about the future and where he is headed. He wants to do what Sivaji Ganesan did at a later stage of his career: to pave the way for the youth and watch them grow. But it also reminds that the chair on which Shivaji was sitting and later the lotus remained empty.

Vikram is currently running in theaters
