A group of locals allegedly asked a 16-year-old Dalit girl not to attend school on the ground that other girls were also not studying in a village near Shajapur in Madhya Pradesh, a police officer said. The police have arrested seven people in connection with the incident that took place after a clash between the girl’s family and the accused in Bavaliyakhedi village on Saturday, in which some people were injured, he said.
The girl released a video in which she alleged that the accused snatched her school bag and objected to her going to classes. She alleged that the accused assaulted her brother when he objected to his comments and also beat up other family members.
Kotwali police station in-charge Awadhesh Kumar Shesh said on Tuesday, quoting a complaint, that the incident took place when a minor girl belonging to the Scheduled Caste community was on her way home after studying in a local school on Saturday afternoon. He said some people allegedly beat up and snatched the girl’s school bag and told her not to go to school as other girls in the village were not doing the same.

Later, a clash broke out between the girl’s family and the accused’s relatives, he said. Following the complaint, the police on Monday arrested seven people under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, the official said.
He said that a case has also been registered against the girl’s brother and three others alleging assault on behalf of the other side. The official said that those injured in the clash are being treated at the district hospital, but did not give the exact number.
