Former India opener Vinod Kambli booked for assaulting his wife Andrea

The Mumbai Police has registered an FIR against former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli for allegedly assaulting and abusing his wife in a drunken state at their suburban Bandra home. An official gave this information on Sunday.

No arrest has been made so far in connection with the alleged incident that took place on Friday.

Kambli’s wife, Andrea, in her police complaint alleged that he hurled the handle of a cooking pan at her, injuring her on the head, an official at the Bandra police station said.

The incident took place between 1 pm and 1.30 pm on Friday when Kambli, allegedly in an inebriated state, reached his flat and started abusing his wife, they said.

His 12-year-old son, who was present at the time, intervened in the fight, but Kambli went to the kitchen, brought the handle of a broken frying pan and allegedly threw it at his wife, injuring her. The official said quoting the complaint.

Later, Kambli’s wife went to Bhabha Hospital for medical examination.

Based on his complaint, the Bandra police on Friday registered an FIR against Kambli under sections 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapon) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code, the official said.

He said that the matter is being investigated.

The 51-year-old former middle-order batsman played 17 Tests for India along with 104 ODIs after making his international debut against Pakistan in October 1991.
