Viral video shows Sri Lankan protesters helping dog exposed to tear gas

Sri Lankan police earlier this week fired tear gas to disperse a protesting crowd outside the prime minister’s office. While some protesters who appeared to be unconscious were taken to a hospital, others were seen running away trying to escape a heavy tear gas attack.

Amidst the chaos, a group of protesters helped a street dog come into contact with the chemical and a video of the same has surfaced online. The clip shared on Reddit shows protesters washing the dog’s face with water.

Since being shared, the video has garnered over 22,000 upvotes. Many internet users commended the Sri Lankan protesters for their act of kindness.

One user wrote, “The kindness these protesters are showing is inspiring. I really wish them all the best. When you see the many acts of kindness, especially like animals.” Another said, “With all the shit they’re going through on their own it’s beautiful how they put this dog in the first place.” “Oh, people sometimes give me hope back in humanity,” commented the third.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, anti-government protesters Sri Lanka said they were now “peacefully withdrawing” from official buildings. According to reports, around 85 people were admitted with injuries earlier this week. One person also died of suffocation after tear gas shells were fired at the Prime Minister’s Office. In addition, police said a soldier and a constable were injured in overnight clashes with protesters outside the national parliament.

Protesters stormed President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s palace over the weekend, forcing him to flee to the Maldives on Wednesday. Huge angry crowds gathered at Mr. Rajapaksa’s official residence, shouting slogans and waving the national flag before entering the property by breaking barricades. He was even recorded mocking wrestling at the prime minister’s bed.
