Visva Bharati University vice-chancellor asks for police protection as student protests continue

Vice Chancellor of Visva Bharati University Vidyut Chakraborty on Tuesday sought police protection as the students’ protest over the expulsion of three students continued. a Classes of students surrounded the residence of the Vice Chancellor The standoff continued for another 48 hours on 27 August. The VC sent an e-mail to Birbhum district superintendent of police Nagendra Nath Tripathi seeking police protection after a section of students allegedly tried to forcibly enter his residence.

In some videos, chaos is seen at the main entrance of the VC’s residence and private security guards are seen struggling to keep the students away from the entrance.

The expelled students have been identified as Somnath Shaw, Falguni Pan and Roopa Chakraborty. He was suspended for “disrupting the academic atmosphere in the university campus by gathering at Chhatimtala on January 9 and indulging in disorderly conduct in the name of protest”.

On the night of 30 August, Manju Mohan Mukherjee, nominated by the Vice-Chancellor of the Visva-Bharati University’s executive council, tried to meet the agitating students to pacify them to withdraw their protest, but was unsuccessful. “I tried to meet the student but he is not in a mood to discuss. They are free to approach the judiciary,” Mukherjee said.

University officials have now decidedTemporarily postpone the admission process till further notice.

Sudipta Bhattacharya, President, Visva Bharati Faculty Association said, “The admission process is an online process. The Vice Chancellor is trying to link it with the students’ movement, which is not true. These are old tricks for passing buck. When the university can hold important executive committee meeting online, what is stopping them from continuing with the admission process?”

Meanwhile, a Visva Bharati student lodged a police complaint against the VC for verbally instructing his officers to shut down the Visva Bharati Central Administrative Building for creating ‘unrest’ on Monthly Payment Day.

The student, identified as Devvrat Nath, suspects conspiracy behind the move as he alleged that the VC would try to hold him responsible for the delay in salary payment.

“It has come to our notice that Visva Bharati Vice Chancellor, Prof Vidyut Chakraborty and Acting Registrar Ashok Mahato deliberately verbally directed the closure of Visva Bharati Central Administrative Building to create disturbance in Visva Bharati on Monthly Payment Day. This is tantamount to criminal conspiracy and therefore, we request you to illegally close the Visva Bharati Central Administrative Building on an official assignment against Professor Bidyut Chakraborty, Ashok Mahato, Registrar, Sanjay Ghosh, Accounts Officer and DDO, Visva Bharati. To file an FIR. Day and day of wage payment for creating disturbances,” reads the complaint letter.
