‘Vivah Bhojanambu’ movie review: For some lockdown jibe

telugu comedy wedding dinner The film directed by Ram Abbaraju doesn’t take itself too seriously and expects us as audiences to not do the same. The onset of the pandemic and the lockdown in 2020 have been taken full advantage of. Some of this translates to laughing out loud while others fall flat. Comedian Satya is in the lead role as the lead actor. She and Srikanth Iyengar try to shoulder the film which turns into a dreary zone when the laughter dries up.

Satya is cast as Mahesh, a miserly insurance agent from a middle-class background who believes he is only frugal. He falls in love with Anita (Arjvi Raj), who hails from an affluent family. Predictably, there are lewd comments about Mahesh’s background and Anita’s family wonders why she chose a boy who, according to the traditional norms of society, isn’t handsome, wealthy or does a good job.

This in itself could have set the stage for an unlikely romance story. Thinking color photo In a light vein. wedding dinner Heads in a different direction, to milk the lockdown setting for humour.

The fun begins when the couple is engaged with the blessings of the girl’s grandfather, much to the disbelief of the girl’s father, Ramakrishna (Srikanth Iyengar). Ramakrishna demands that Mahesh and his family bear the wedding expenses. Mahesh is the kind of miser who buys a box of sweets for decorative purposes and hopes to return it to the store! The prospect of spending for marriage puts her aside.

Hell breaks out when the bride’s family stays at the groom’s house during the lockdown. They all joke about welcoming silly WhatsApp guests who find their way into the movie. Mahesh has to deal with strange characters – an elder who has a weakness for sweets, another elder who complains about the lack of watery coffee and cashews in Upma, and that Upma has become the staple snack. Then there’s the girl’s uncle (the late TNR), whose maths isn’t even elementary, giving rise to ludicrous jokes. Whenever the Prime Minister comes on television to announce the extension of the lockdown, it makes the ball more fun.

Satya and Sudarshan try to keep things going as friends, but there is a limit to how far these lockdown jokes can be extended. After a point, the gag becomes as exhausting as the never-ending lockdown. Remember those reports about people trying to travel in an ambulance? Producer and actor Sandeep Kishan is seen in an extended cameo as the ambulance driver speaking the Nellore accent, that too gets milk for humour. He hallucinates about his dead girlfriend and keeps repeating distorted proverbs like ‘the customer is the dog’. It soon becomes sarcastic.

The later parts which try to show Mahesh’s good nature are quite fictional. The million dollar question of how Anita and Mahesh fell in love also fails due to a flashback. Had this part been better, we would have rooted for him and his marriage.
