Browser is the first full blown browser for the car

Vivaldi, the web browser company founded by Opera founder John Stephenson von Tetzner, has launched a first-of-its-kind web browser for Google’s Android automotive operating system that powers electric cars. This will first debut on the Polestar 2 which is a joint venture between Geely and Volvo and will likely come to Volvo’s vehicles as well, with Volvo adopting the OS for their cars. This also makes it the first full-featured desktop browser for the car.

This development comes after it released its first browser for Android smartphones after developing a very rich and private browser for Mac and PC. It has a vision to develop a browser for all the devices where people can access the web. This browser can be found on the Google Play Store on the Android Automotive platform.

“We are really proud to introduce our browser in a car for the first time and especially with a brand like Polestar. Our technological and sustainability ambitions are well aligned. We believe in transparency, privacy and responsible innovation. Values - including the fact that we have servers in Iceland, one of Polestar’s newest markets. Like Polestar, we are a challenging brand, and we take a Scandinavian approach to design, which builds on trust and our is based on listening to users,” says Vivaldi CEO John Stephenson von Tetzner.

On the Polestar 2, the app brings full web browser functionality to the car’s 11-inch center display, powered by Android Automotive. Vivaldi has worked with Polestar to ensure passenger and driver safety. This means it can only be used when the car is parked and streaming content will be audio-only when driving is started. No data is stored by the car and when a Vivaldi account is logged in the data is shared across devices for instant syncing. Again, the data is not shared with Pollstar.

We’ve listened to our owner community, and it’s great that we can respond to their desire for a browser with Vivaldi as a nice Christmas gift,” says Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath.

“Now there’s no limit to the web content you can watch in Polestar 2 – even some of your favorite streaming platforms,” he said.
