brand new Volkswagen Taigun The compact SUV recently went on sale in India with prices starting from ₹ 10.50 Lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The SUV marks the German carmaker’s entry into India’s highly competitive compact SUV space. Taigun is based on the highly localized MQB-A0 IN platform which is also shared by Kushak. The SUV competes with the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and Skoda Kushaq. Here’s how they stack up against each other in terms of fuel efficiency.

The Volkswagen Taigun SUV is offered with a choice of two petrol engines – 1.0-litre TSI and 1.5-litre TSI EVO.

Since the Volkswagen Taigun is a petrol-only SUV, we will only consider the fuel efficiency of the petrol engine. Both the Taigun and the Kushak get the same set of 1.0-litre TSI and 1.5-litre TSI engines, and interestingly, the Creta shares its platform and engine with its cousin – Seltos. Both the SUVs come with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated motor and a 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine.

Taigun’s 1.0-litre TSI engine comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, which is claimed to deliver an ARAI certified mileage of 18.10 kmpl, while the 1.5-litre TSI EVO unit is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox , which gives a fuel efficiency of 18.47 kmpl. . The 1.0-litre TSI 6-speed AT and 1.5-litre TSI EVO 7-speed DSG variants of the Taigun have claimed mileage of 16.44 kmpl and 17.88 kmpl respectively. The 1.5-litre TSI MT variant of the Taigun is the most fuel-efficient, followed by the 1.0-litre MT variant.

The Hyundai Creta SUV also shares its platform and transmission with the Kia Seltos.

NS Skoda Kushaki The 1.0-litre TSI is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox that gives a mileage of 17.88 kmpl, while the 1.5-litre TSI with the 6-speed manual transmission claims a mileage of 17.95 kmpl. The 1.0-litre TSI 6-speed and 1.5-litre TSI 7-speed DSG variants of the Kushaq SUV offer fuel efficiency of 15.78 kmpl and 17.70 kmpl respectively.

The Kia Seltos comes with a choice of 1.5-litre and 1.4-litre petrol mills. The 1.5-litre 6MT gives a mileage of 16.1 kmpl, while the 1.5-litre iMT unit and 1.4-litre T-GDi 6MT returns 16.5 kmpl. The automatic variants of the Seltos with 6-speed iVT (1.5-litre) and 7-speed DCT (1.4-litre) return fuel efficiency of 16.8 kmpl and 16.5 kmpl. Both the 1.5-litre 6MT and 1.4-litre 7DCT variants Hyundai Creta Gives mileage of 16.8 kmpl. However, the 1.5-litre iVT variant delivers a fuel efficiency of 16.9 kmpl.
