Vote in Rajya Sabha polls after Pankaja Munde’s condemnation, put to rest rumors of dissent: Fadnavis’ to-do list out of isolation

The week-long isolation period of former Maharashtra Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis ended on Thursday as he tested negative for Covid-19. The negative test result means that Fadnavis will not have to wear PPE kit on Friday while voting for the Rajya Sabha elections in Maharashtra.

The former CM will spend his first day at different meetings with senior party leaders and Maharashtra in charge A day after the BJP released its list of candidates for the MLC elections on June 20.

“He had tested positive six days back, and was feeling unwell for a few days before that. He is in isolation since his test results came. He was tested last night after a period of one week. The report has arrived today. He is negative,” Fadnavis’s office said.

The BJP leader was conducting official business of the party from isolation, attending key meetings through video-conferencing.

The party had on Wednesday announced five candidates for the upcoming elections to the 10 seats of the Maharashtra Legislative Council, the upper house of the state legislature, with Fadnavis’s seal big on the list despite their week-long separation.

The candidates announced so far include Shrikant Bhartiya, the office of Fadnavis who took over as the chief minister and Uma Khapare, president of the Maharashtra BJP’s women’s wing. According to a release issued by the BJP, it has chosen Praveen Darekar (current Leader of Opposition in the council), Ram Shankar Shinde (former minister) and Prasad Lad, apart from Bhartiya and Khapre.

The most notable omission is that of former minister Pankaja Munde, daughter of BJP veteran late Gopinath Munde. It was earlier speculated that the party might nominate Pankaja, who lost to her cousin Dhananjay Munde of the NCP in the 2019 state assembly elections.

There was a flurry of discontent from a certain section of Maharashtra BJP after Pankaja Munde was sidelined for both Rajya Sabha and MLC nominations.
