Amidst the Russian invasion, a couple in Ukraine decide to engrave their love with wedding ink, before things get worse than they already are. Although it was not the wedding they had in mind, the couple’s eyes were moist and smiling as they took their vows. Yarina Areeva, 21, and Svyatoslav Fursin, 24, had set their wedding date later in May. Talking about the wedding planning, Areeva told how she should have stood on this “very lovely terrace” of a restaurant overlooking the Dnieper River. “Just us and the river and the beautiful lights,” Kiev City Council deputy Areva said while speaking to CNN.

The couple decided to get married in Kiev’s St. Michael’s Monastery on the day Russia invaded Ukraine’s borders. “The situation is tough. We’re going to fight for our land. We might just die. And, we just wanted to be together before all that,” Ariva said. Arrivia’s husband, who is a software engineer, will head the local regional defense center to help defend the country.

“Maybe they will just give us armor, and we will go and fight. Maybe we can help some more. They will decide,” Ariva said.
