War in Ukraine: Reasons behind Roman Abramovich’s decision to sell Chelsea FC

Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich issued a statement on Wednesday 2 March saying that he has decided to separate from his football club Chelsea.

The reason for selling the club is – Labor MP Chris Bryant called for Roman Abramovich to be approved by the British government. Bryant revealed that Abramovich alleged a close relationship with Vladimir Putin and is a person of interest to the Russian government.

Although Roman Abramovich has denied these ties and said he has no ties to the Russian government or Vladimir Putin, excessive political pressure on Russia could result in sanctioning the Russian billionaire. The consequences could be dire for Abramovich because all of his wealth would be frozen.

A few days ago, Abramovich announced that he would hand over the club to the trustees of the club’s foundation. However, the trustees have yet to agree to take it as they need more information on UK charity law to understand whether the move would be legal.

Abramovich is trying not only to sell his club, but also to keep all other assets to avoid damages when it will be sanctioned. All this political pressure on Abramovich has increased as a result of Putin’s decision to declare an all-out war to invade Ukraine.

According to the Jewish Post, a spokesman for Abramovich confirmed that he is doing his best to help Ukraine. “I can confirm that Roman Abramovich was contacted by the Ukrainian side for support in achieving a peaceful solution, and he has been trying to help ever since. Given all that is at stake, we Will ask to understand why we have not commented on such situation or its involvement,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

Russian film director Alexander Rodninsky is said to be one of Abramovich’s most important facilitators for peace talks. Meanwhile, Chelsea FC coach Thomas Tuchel turned down questions at a recent press conference, asking members of the press to stop asking him such questions as he is not a politician.
