War Memorial in Mumbai, Army Museum soon

Mumbai will soon have a State War Memorial and an Army Museum. Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday directed officials to identify a location and start the work of opening a portion of the memorial before August 15, 2022.

Mr Thackeray held a meeting with senior army officials, which decided to set up expert committees to consult on the design of the monument as well as decide what should be included. The Consultative and Design Committees will have officers from the Army as well as experts from the field.

“The memorial should realize how our jawans work in difficult weather conditions to protect our borders. Visitors will get to experience the bunkers, minus degree centigrade temperature in Siachen, and how our jawans move with heavy bags in the desert or jungle,” Mr Thackeray said.

The museum will display war stories, weapons used as well as information about famous soldiers in all three branches of the state’s armed forces. Pictures of tanks, helicopters, ships and fighter planes will also be displayed. The museum will also have a special gallery on Chhatrapati Shivaji and his defense skills and naval planning.

The museum will also have an activity area that will guide the youth on the importance of maintaining a strong physique and basic skills on self defence. Discussions were also held to see whether courses providing counseling on joining the armed forces can be started.
