The England men’s cricket team broke several records with a mammoth record of 498/4 during the first ODI against the Netherlands in Amstelveen on Friday. The total by far in the history of ODIs – men’s or women’s – and the most by any team in List A cricket.

Four England batsmen thrashed the hapless Dutch bowlers, three of whom scored a century each while one scored a blistering half-century. Jos Buttler scored an unbeaten 16 off 70 balls, David Malan made 125 off 109 balls and Phil Salt scored an unbeaten 122 off 93 balls.
Liam Livingstone then broke the record for the fastest fifty by an Englishman in ODI cricket, reaching there in just 17 balls. He remained unbeaten on 66 off 22.
Overall England hit 36 fours and 26 sixes and in the process became the first team to score 300 runs through boundaries in an ODI – they scored exactly 300 runs.

He also broke the record for most sixes by a team in an ODI by sending the ball over the boundary 26 times – a better than the previous record of 25 which was incidentally also set by England in the 2019 ODI World Cup against Afghanistan.

In reply, Netherlands were bowled out for 266 in 49.4 overs as England registered a massive 232-run victory to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
Butler completed his century in just 47 balls and thus became the first batsman to score three centuries in ODIs in 50 or fewer balls.
He also came close to breaking another record – the fastest 150 in ODIs – that is held by AB de Villiers. He took 65 deliveries to reach 150 which is just one more than de Villiers.
Butler accepts that he is in the form of his life. “Surely sounds like the form of my life, IPL Was fantastic, absolutely loved it and came back here. The World T20 went well, the Ashes was tough but no cricket was fresh for two months,” he said after receiving his player of the match award during the post-match presentation.
