Watch: Gujarat’s Somnath temple illuminated in tricolor before Independence Day 2022

Before the 75th independence, Shri Somnath temple in Prabhas Patan, Gujarat has been illuminated with tricolor. Sharing a video, Union Minister for Culture, Tourism and Development of North Eastern Region G Kishan Reddy tweeted: “Majestic Somnath Temple in Tricolour Colours: #HargharTiranga, #Amrit Mahotsav.” In the past too, the temple was decorated with colorful lights and the Shivling was decorated with tricolor flowers and a turban.

It is believed that this temple is the first of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Shiva. It is also called Ahilyabai Temple as it was built by Rani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore in the 18th century.

The central government has launched a ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign under which people are being encouraged to hoist the tricolor in their homes as part of 75 years of India’s independence. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is also preparing to hoist the national flag at the sites of 150 of its monuments on Independence Day. Apart from this, work is also being done to illuminate 150 monuments on the theme of the tricolor, which is expected to start in a few days.

The main Independence Day celebrations take place annually at the Red Fort where the Prime Minister hoists the national flag on the ramparts of the Mughal-era monument. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage sites apart from Qutub Minar and Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi.

The Tricolor will also be hoisted in the historic Residency of Lucknow, the site of major events during the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi in Porbandar, the British Era Residency in Lucknow, Gulab Bari of Faizabad, Fort Vellore (Chennai circle), Warangal Fort ( Hyderabad Circle) and Fort, Chitradurga (Bangalore Circle), an ASI official said.
