Watch: Neeraj Chopra touches the feet of the elderly, the internet says ‘respect’

Neeraj Chopra won the silver medal in this event with a career best throw of 89.94m.

Javelin thrower and Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra recently made the entire nation proud by breaking his national record while competing in the Diamond League in Stockholm, Sweden.

The Tokyo Olympic winner broke his personal record in the Stockholm Diamond League for the second time in a month. Neeraj won the silver medal in the event with a career best throw of 89.94m.

And now by touching the feet of an elderly man who came to congratulate, he has again won the hearts of the people. A video of his touching gesture is going viral on social media in which Mr Chopra is seen interacting with a group of fans in Stockholm and clicking pictures. Part of that group was an elderly man, and as he congratulated the Tokyo Olympic champion, he retaliated by touching her feet.

He also told his Indian fans that he has to leave as his bus is waiting for him. The elderly man is heard encouraging Neeraj that he will reach the 90m mark on his next outing.

“Next time will go above 90 (next time, you will definitely throw over 90 meters),” said the man.

The clip has been shared widely on Twitter, showing people wishing Mr Chopra all the best for his future, to which he politely replied saying, “Dhanyavaad (thank you)”.

The post has garnered several comments and has garnered over 2 lakh views and over 11,000 likes on Twitter. Users can be seen appreciating his gesture in the comment section of the post.

One user wrote, “Neeraj makes us feel proud of him on and off the field too..Stay on the field.”

While the other simply said, “Respect.”

A third wrote, “Such a humble person.”

Neeraj Chopra is only the second Indian after discus thrower Vikas Gowda to break into the top three of the Diamond League meet.

Gowda, the 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medalist, who retired in 2017, has achieved four top-three spots in Diamond League events during his career. He finished second in New York in 2012, Doha in 2014 and third in Shanghai and Eugene in 2015.
