Italian air-race competitor and stunt pilot Dario Costa broke into the Guinness Book of World Records by flying an airplane through two tunnels in Istanbul, Turkey. Mr Costa’s world record is for the longest airplane flight taken through a tunnel for a distance of 1,730 metres. The video of this flight was released by Austrian company Red Bull on Facebook on September 4, 2021. The video has already garnered 1.4 lakh reactions and has been shared 62k times. Mr Costa’s flight is seen taking off inside one of the Catalka tunnels outside Istanbul. As the flight progresses, it is airborne before exiting the first tunnel.
The second tunnel is longer but Mr. Costa can easily pass through it. Soon after coming out of the second tunnel, a camera inside the plane shows him screaming and crying with joy.
Red Bull’s caption read, “Dario takes the aviation game to another level with his flight through Istanbul’s Catalca Tunnels, flying 2.6km through 2 tunnels at an average speed of 245.07km/h and the Guinness World Became a record-setting pilot. Process.”
The stunt also set other records. It became the first flight through the tunnel; First airplane flight through two tunnels; The first airplane to fly through a tunnel and the longest flight under a solid obstacle.
The audience was stunned after watching the video. One user, Finn James, wrote, “Absolutely amazing. Congratulations, Dario, I screamed in my living room the very moment you caught my breath! That precision and mastery of control was awesome to see.”
Another user, Richard Lee, drew a comparison between Mr Costa’s feat and the game Grand Theft Auto. The user wrote, “When GTA isn’t enough and you need to do it IRL.”
A spectator named Timothy Adam was impressed by the stunt and said, “This is the weirdest plane stunt ever in the history of aviation. I dare you to find something more intense, challenging or dangerous.”
One user called it “hypnotic” as Mr Costa took off through the tunnel. Another user supported the idea, writing, “Reminds me of 2001’s Space Odyssey.”
Some users even resorted to jokes to praise Mr. Costa. One such viewer, Brad Cohen, wrote, “Mr. Costa, tollway authorities would like to discuss the fact that you forgot to stop at the toll booth.”
