Watch: Tourists drive on Karnataka Cable Bridge, locals call them back

A few days after the Gujarat tragedy, tourists were seen taking a car on the Karnataka Cable Bridge

Bangalore:

Two days after a cable bridge collapsed in Gujarat due to a large crowd of people, some tourists took a car over a small suspension bridge over a river in Karnataka. Locals confronted the tourists and forced them to remove the car immediately as the weight could affect the structural integrity of the narrow cable bridge.

A video of the incident shows tourists, unaware of the danger, arguing with protesting locals that they will still drive the car, a Maruti Suzuki 800.

Eventually, two men gently pushed the car toward one of the bridge’s two exits. As the men slowly moved forward, the structure shook. A large group of people standing behind the car is also visible on the bridge.

This structure, named Shivapura Hanging Bridge, is a popular tourist destination in the town of Yellapura in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka. Locals said that the tourists were from Maharashtra.

The police said that it is probing the matter and will consider registering a case.

In the Gujarat Cable Bridge tragedy, the state’s forensic team found that the century-old structure collapsed due to a huge crowd of people, which put severe pressure on the structure. The restoration work of the bridge was going on for the last seven months. It was reopened on 26 October, the Gujarati New Year. Sources said that the renovator company did not replace some old cables of the bridge.

Old videos taken at different times showed dozens of people running and jumping on the Gujarat Cable Bridge to take it away for fun.
